Note the cast iron elbow at the top of the photo. This is where the sewer pipes need to vent to (not into the attic as they are). The green bucket contains the water that drips from the elbow. The bucket should be emptied once in a while so the water does overflow onto the insulation and back of the ceiling causing mold and damage.
